Siemens Subsidiary Launches High-Efficiency LED Greenhouse Grow Lights

A subsidiary of Germany’s Siemens, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, has developed a deep red LED greenhouse grow light, tailored to boost crop photosynthesis while cutting energy use—built on advancing high-power LED tech.

This LED emits light at 660 nm, a wavelength ideal for plant photosynthesis. It converts 37% of input energy into light output, leading the industry in same-color emission efficiency. A Danish pilot with 50,000 such LEDs across a multi-thousand-square-meter greenhouse reduced energy consumption by 40% versus prior setups.

Traditional greenhouse artificial light sources—like fluorescent lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, low-pressure sodium lamps, and metal halide lamps—have high infrared/green spectral ratios but low red/blue components (critical for photosynthesis), resulting in poor energy utilization and high consumption.

In contrast, this LED solution not only elevates energy use efficiency but also targets crop growth stages: red light promotes stem elongation, while blue light aids germination. Adjusting blue light to 10%-30% of total light also lowers fertilizer needs.

Siemens notes the red-blue LED system boasts 60% higher luminous efficiency than traditional high-pressure sodium lamps, with a 100,000-hour average lifespan enabling years of maintenance-free operation.
